What’s so revolutionary about To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before isn’t that it features an Asian American lead, it’s that being Asian American isn’t Lara Jean’s main character trait. “There are stories where you specifically focus on race, and then there are stories where you just tell someone’s life,” Condor explains. To All The Boys is definitely the latter, but that doesn’t mean that it’s not an important film for Asian Americans. “I want to represent our community, but also represent us Asian Americans in a way where it’s like, ‘Look, we are just like you! We’re not this other entity. This is your girl next door,” Condor says.

Check out a new interview Lana did with NBC Asian America! She discussed To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before and the lack of Asian lead roles in rom coms. There’s a new production still photo from the movie!

TATBILB production still

It’s been more than two years since Lana Condor got the call that jumpstarted her dream career, and now the 20-year-old actress is seeing another dream come true.

“A few months ago when I was on a plane, I was daydreaming about how fun it’d be to act in a romantic comedy, because I don’t know of any rom-coms where Asian women are the leads,” Condor told NBC News. “And now here we are.”

That “here” is “To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” an adaptation of Jenny Han’s three-part young adult novel, that stars Condor as Jean Song Covey, a half Korean, half white teenager who lives with her widowed father and two sisters. The novel chronicles Lara Jean’s suddenly complicated love life, after letters she’s written to the boys she’s loved and hidden beneath her bed are found and sent.

The film, which wrapped in early August and doesn’t yet have a release date, will also feature Janel Parrish of “Pretty Little Liars” and Anna Cathcart as Lara Jean’s sisters – a casting choice that author Han praised, posting online after the movie’s announcement: “That is truly groundbreaking. I haven’t seen Asian American women centered on the screen since Joy Luck Club, which was nearly 25 years ago.”
